Why Am I Seeing Double After Toric Lens Implant?

March 2, 2011

I had cataract surgery and a toric lens put in about 3 weeks ago, now my depth perception is way off and I can’t drive to work.  The eye that isn’t done yet has a bifocal lens in the glasses and I have put clear glass in the eye that had the surgery.  First thing in the morning, I see double, by the end of the day it’s not too bad.  Is this all going to clear up when I get my other eye done?

I had restor toric lenses implanted in both of my eyes. I am not satisfied. My astigmatism was 1.25 in the left eye and 1.50 in my right eye. Now it is approximately 1.00 in both eyes which I feel is not a great achievement. But most of all, I had ghost/double image in both of my eyes. When I close my right eye and see with the left eye only, I can see a “shadow/double/ghost image” next to the original image, and this shadow/double is a little left down to the original image. This effect is very weak, however. But when I close my left eye and see with the right eye, I have a similar only much stronger effect – I see a very noticeable shadow to the image, which is down-right to it. When looking at the small flag icon in the down right corner of my laptop, I can see two flags. When seeing with the right eye at a distance – the vision is noticeably blurred. Left eye is far better in this respect – the vision is not that blurred. My doctor does not know where this effect comes from. He claims my lenses are positioned OK and offers no explanation.
Why do I see double with a single eye? Is it due to this left-over astigmatism? Can anyone help?

I am only 33 years old and I had restor toric lenses implanted in both of my eyes due to the cataract. I am not satisfied. My astigmatism was 1.25 in the left eye and 1.50 in my right eye. Now it is approximately 1.00 in both eyes which I feel is not a great achievement. But most of all, I had ghost/double/shadow (name it however you like) vision in both of my eyes. When I close my right eye and see with the left eye only, I can see a “shadow/double/ghost image” next to the original image, and this shadow/double is a little left down to the original image. This effect in this eye is very weak, thank God.
But when I close my left eye and see with the right eye, I have a similar only much stronger effect – I see a very noticeable double image to the image, which is down-right to it. When looking at the small flag icon in the down right corner of my laptop, I can see two flags! When looking at a notebook with a squared paper, I can see a very visible additional square downright from the original one. When seeing with the right eye at a distance – the images are noticeably blurred. Left eye is far batter in this respect – the vision is not that blurred.
My doctor does not know where this effect comes from. He claims my lenses are positioned OK and offers no explanation. I am devastated. Although I had the operation fairly recently, (left eye two weeks ago, right eye – 9 days ago), I am devastated. Will this effect go away with time? Why do I see double with one eye? Why do I sse those strange double images? Not only was my astigmatism not treated up to my expectations, I now have a double vision. Does it come from this remaining astigmatism, or is it something else? I spent so much money so i could see without glassess, and for what?
    Please help!

I had a Toric lens implanted on Dec 17, 2014. On January 28, 2015 had final exam. Vision was 20/20. It was like having HD vision. Was loving it. Between that exam and February 26, about four weeks my vision in that eye became increasingly worse. My Doctor the surgeon who performed my surgery re-examined me and found that the blurring and distortions I was experiencing were from a macular hole forming in my eye. I believe it is caused by the cataracts surgery. (Side effect from the trauma of surgery). I now have to have surgery to correct the hole forming and will most likely have to lay flat for two or more weeks face down. Not excited. I suggest that anyone who is experiencing simular situations should ask to be tested for this. FyI, floaters, and distorted vision are signs that this could be happening to you. I know this is not great news but at least it could be worth asking your doctor’s to check.

I had the toric lens implanted in my left eye in November and see perfectly with it for distance; however, a week later I had the toric lense implanted in my right eye….the vision in that eye is very bad for distance and one week after the surgery I developed double vision which I have had ever since. the only way I can drive is to close my right eye while driving to prevent the double vision. I have seen 3 doctors and no one can help me.

Does anyone know if it is normal to see well (distance) on the first and second day of cataract removal and Toric lens implant but to have less clear or blurrier vision on the 3rd day? I know it takes time to heal and to see well but I am surprised that I went from seeing well to not as well in three days. I am waiting to have Toric lens implant in my right eye in about a month (no cataract there but severe astigmatism). I feel as if I am slightly drunk and off balance. I am hoping t his is normal. I do not have any flashing lights but do see a colorful ray/beam of light going through a light bulb when I look at light and sometimes dull grey rays of light. Hoping this will go away with time.

I had a cataract removed from one eye in April 2012. I has also been diagnosed with a severe astigmatism. The removal of the cataract did absolutely nothing to improve my vision, despite having had a Toric lens implanted to correct the astigmatism. My opthomologist told me on several subsequent follow up visits, that perhaps PRK surgery would be the way to best treat the still present issue of blurriness, supposedly due to the still present astigmatism. It would seem that the Toric lens, as well as the removal of the cataract, did nothing to improve the vision in that eye. In July 2012, I had the PRK procedure done. I spent days with excruciating pain and discomfort in my eye, and there has been no improvement in my vision. In fact, the vision in that eye has worsened, as i had better vision prior to any treatment. The worst part is that glasses don’t help at all. My vision in that eye is 20:200, and nothing has helped. If there is an ophthalmologist out there that thinks that I can be helped, please let me know via this forum. By the way, I had seen 2 other ophthalmologists to get their opinions. One was a neuro-optomologist, who conducted several tests relative to the possibility of potential neurological issues at play, and found nothing wrong. My eye appears normal, yet 3 doctors concur, my vision is terrible. Extremely frustrating.

I am scheduled for cataract surgery and toric implants in the next two weeks to correct my astigmatism .In June of 2014 I went to a medical school for an opinion on my blurry vision and sometimes double vision. My eyes were dilated …no mention of cataracts. The problem still continued. My regular doctor, an ophthalmologist, ordered prism correction lenses
No suggestion of cataracts. The lenses didn’t work; my vision was definitely blurred.
The doctor suggested my eye muscles might be getting looser with age.
I assume the cataracts were a later development .
Will the toric lens help with prism correction?

I have cataract surgery done in June 2014. I chose the Mutli Focus Lenses and am sorry I did. I see halos around every shiny object, can not focus sharply on anything more than 30 feet away and driving at night is like driving through an overly lit Christmas display. After complaining to my surgeon I ended up wearing progressive glasses like I did before surgery but at a lower prescription but still see halos around lights.

CAN THESE LENSES BE REMOVED AND REPLACED WITH STANDARD LENSES?

I understand that I will still need to wear glasses with progressive lenses, as I do now. I want to know if replacement surgery can be done.

I had Toric cataract lenses put in Feb of 2011 and have been experiencing double vision for quite a long time since. My surgeon didnt seem to be addressing my concerns at any check up, and finally on the last trip in, I told the pre-exam associate, why should I bother complaining when nothing is addressed or acknowledged about my concern. That day, my surgeon really tested my eyes, and then referred me to a cornea specialist. He performed many testings and then sent me to a lab for eyes mapping and imaging. From there I went to an optometrist, and spent hours in testing, and eventually to be fit for hard contact lenses, but was told he couldnt help because he didnt have a prescription strong enough to get rid of all of the double vision. He said hed give my records to the cornea specialist, and hed be contacting me for an appointment. I waited 4 months and not a word. I called every six weeks, and still no appointment or call back. I got fed up, called and asked for a copy of my medical records, and made an appointment at Mayo Clinic eye care.
I just got in last week to the Cornea specialist at Mayo, and have had minimal testing from him, and then referred to the optometrist about hard contact lenses which blamed the condition onto to the Toric Lenses. She said they are known to cause double vision, or called monocular diplopia. Look that up online to see what the causes are and if youre experiencing any or are deficient in the Vitamin D. The OPtometrist said a couple things may happen. One, is to remove the Toric lense and replace it with a different brand, or two, remove the lense permanently and make up the difference in vision in my glasses prescription. Back to the Cornea specialist and more testing to be had. Now he is sending me to the Retina specialist to rule out retina problems, before making his recommendations. If you feel as I did about possibly falling through the cracks and not getting treatment, dont hesitate to see another specialist. Im getting so close to getting help now, and hope medicare’s approved lenses are far better than the Toric that was recommended by my surgeon. I wasted $1800. on lenses that have to be replaced already, and I dont want you to.

I had cataract surgery and toric lens put in. About 4 days after surgery I had gunk on my eyelash from the drops and dipped a q-tip in alcohol to try to remove the gunk. I got a very small bit in my eye. Could that ruin the lens?

Had cataract surgery in July on both eyes-Toric Lenses. Both lenses shifted on me and i had to go back in and have both of them repositioned. afterwards,i was finally seeing well-i could even read text on my phone-do computer work etc without even using readers. Then i noticed i could no longer see this way w/o readers. At appt-told i needed YAG laser on both eyes–had both done, but i still cannot see/read anything that i was able to before without constantly having to wear the readers. Why would this change even after YAG?? i wouldnt have had a Toric and spent thousands on lenses if i knew i would still have to wear glasses all day long to do my job. would have had standard lens and gone back to wearing contact lenses all day for all distances–very depressed about this-especially with all the out of pocket money i have had to spend!!

I had cataract surgery in 2010. Toric lens. Reading ability was superb. The other eye uses a contact lens for long range vision. I recently experienced high Intraocular pressure (50) and had a trabeculectomy. Pressure is now at 11. In the 3-4 days following surgery, the pressure again spiked to 50. The doctor “pushed” on the eyeball to force fluid out through the bleb to lower the pressure, which worked. She had to do this on 2 occasions. On the 5th day following surgery she cut one of the stitches to achieve the IOP of 11. The reading ability is completely gone. Could the lens have been moved by the “push”. Can it be repositioned?

I had toric iol’s implanted my first eye came out great. I can see pretty well long distances. That was my bad eye. I commented to my Dr, as I was going in for surgery that I should probably be able to see even better with my good eye. He said that is not necessarily true. Well he was right. I see close really well with the second eye, but my distance is terrible. I think he gave one for distance and one for near. He says he did not. I don’t know . Can it be changed if he did?

I had cataract surgery on my left eye and the toric lense implanted last May, 2014. I thought it was great and couldn’t wait to get my right eye done in July 2014. What a mistake! My doctor said that I might have some trouble driving at night. It is terrifying for me to drive at night. All I can see is lights with giant halos coming at me from all directions. I couldn’t tell where cars were coming from or where I was going. It is absolutely dangerous for me to drive after dark.
My doctor said that I would have to wear glasses for the computer and I do.
He did not tell me that in a dark restaurant I would have to wear sunglasses because the spotlights caused piercing pain in my eyes. Many times my eyes feel fake and swollen like they don’t belong in my head. I have trouble watching TV because the lights in my den have such large halos I can’t see and it causes pain.
I haven’t tried going to the movies I wonder what that would be like.
At work the lights jump off the ceiling at me and make me nervous. My eyes feel strained most of the time. I can’t believe I paid for these lenses and now I am going to have to pay to have them taken OUT. My doctor said that I may be more sensitive to light because I have blue eyes.
I guess I asked the wrong question – I asked had any ever been unhappy with the lenses. He answered only 2 patients were unhappy. I thought that sounded pretty good but I didn’t ask how many people were happy with the lenses.
I haven’t read anyone else complaining that lights bother them as much as they do me. The doctor keeps telling me that I should wait and I may get used to it. It is now November and I am still not used to the lenses. Worse thing I ever did.

I am 57 yrs old and have had 2 corneal transplants due to keratoconus. My left eye was done in 1992 (astigmatism 7.0) and my right eye in 2010 (astigmatism 1.25). Has anyone had a toric lens implant after a corneal transplant? And if so how is your vision now? Also I can see well with corrective lenses, do you wait until your vision is really bad before you do an implant?

  • Debby

Had IOL implants–both eyes done at once. I went from severely nearsighted to far sighted! Surgeon put distance vision in good eye and I can see a mile down the road without glasses–but put close-up and mid-range vision in my bad eye–the left one which is also a lazy eye–so I needed new glasses in order to see my hand in front of my face to the computer screen. Glasses aren’t as strong as before however.
Have some double vision when reading on devices such as iphone and Kindle with backlighting–not sure why–and it is really frustrating.
So I went from thick glasses to less thick glasses and can see to drive without glasses as long as I don’t need to look at the dashboard–distance vision is miraculous!

I received an Alcon Toric IOL three weeks ago. I have 1.5 D of corneal astigmatism and the lens has 1.5 D of cyl. I’ve had double vision in this eye since the cataract surgery. I can correct the double vision by putting on my old glasses. I see all sorts of astigmatic signs, double vision, flags off the top or bottom of Snellin Chart letters without my glasses. Is the IOL off axis? Or is this just part of the healing process that will improve.

Had toric lense implant 4 weeks ago with enormous improvement in distance vision (had toric for reading 3 years ago). Just developed a floater in latest eye which surgeon says is nothing to worry about but it is SO annoying especially
when in bright surroundings and at my computer. From extensive research on web it seems there is a remote possibility it may improve but meantime causes a lot of anxiety – reassurance please.

  • I see you saying a lot of times to just simply wear glasses even after the Toric implant. The problem that I have with that is, I did not pay $3,200 to have to wear glasses. I was told that I would see distance without glasses. It has now been almost 3 months since the Toric implant in my right eye and my vision seems to be regressing from when I first had it done. I had the left eye done in June and that one is still having a lot of glare and double vision. But my eye doctor doesn’t want to do anything with the left eye until they try and fix the right eye. I am scheduled for Lasik surgery to try and correct the double and blurry vision but I have to say that I am very disappointed in this outcome.

I just had cataract suregy 6/4 in my left eye and 7/2 in the right eye, I had AcrySoft implants (-) 5.0 D in both eyes, I feel very greatful to be able to actually see well for the first time since I remembered, but my concern is even though I have sharp clear vision, now I can not drive (my daughter depends on me to take her to school and activities) I can see very far and clear but the road white lines especially in my left eye crosses in between to the right diagonally and I can’t stay straight on the road. I just went to the OD today and recommended me glasses right eye sph -1.50 Cyl +1.00 Axis 085 Add -2.50 and left Sph 1.00 Cyl .75 Ax 080 and Add +2.50 any one experience similar concerns?
