Smoking Increases Risk of Macular Degeneration

Researchers in Japan studied the effect of environmental and physiological parameters on the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).  They found a very strong association with cigarette smoking.  Hypertension and body mass index (BMI) were mildly associated, while serum lipids (including presence of omega-3 fatty acids) or gender were not associated at all.
