What Are Available Treatments for Patient With Floater and Dry AMD?

After being diagnosed with a floater recently, he also noted I have one spot of Macular Degeneration (dry). I am on antidepressants and have been for 10 years. Is there anything I can take, either over the counter or other therapy to help my eyes? What are the chances, if known, that I will have continuing problems?

It sounds as though you have two separate eye problems; a floater and dry macular degeneration.
The floater is most likely a spot in your vitreous. In many cases they become less noticeable with time (weeks to months) and less often, they disappear altogether. Floaters are not disease per se and can be removed surgically. There are no drops. The development of new floaters; however, requires a dilated eye exam to make sure there is no association with a tear in the retina or a retinal detachment.
Macular degeneration cannot be treated with drops. But there is some evidence that patients with “wet” macular degeneration may benefit from taking certain vitamins. There is a specific subset of “high-risk” patients that decrease their chances of severe vision loss by taking the AREDS vitamins.
