Laser Phaco in Cataract Surgery Gaining Momentum

Laser-assisted phacoemulsification uses a femtosecond laser to create the incisions and soften up the cataract to allow for easier and faster removel using the ultrasound handpiece. Those with experience have been trying out different patterns to break up the cataract- cubes, pie-shaped sections, spheres etc. Turns out the best one, even for 4+ nuclear cataracts, is the pie-shaped sections, demonstrating a 30% reduction in ultrasound energy needed for removal. Soon, the cataract will be broken up so well, that the cataract can be removed via a small cannula with no energy, and if the implant can be implanted through such a small opening in the eye, we are talking another seismic shift in cataract surgery.
