Alcon Acrysof Natural IOL That Filters Blue Light May Prevent Macular Degeneration

In a short prospective study, investigators compared the effects of a blue-light filtering IOL versus a non-filtering IOL. The patients were then followed for macular pigment density for up to one year.
Of the 42 patients involved, 21 patients received the Alcon Acrysof Natural IOL and the others received the Alcon AcrySof three-piece acrylic IOL. The Acrysof Natural IOL filters blue light.
The results indicate that macular density was increased in the group where the blue light was blocked. In the fellow group, the macular pigment was stable.
Lutein and zeaxanthin blood levels were measured and were not increased in either group.
