There has been a longstanding debate over cataract surgery in the presence of age-related, non-neovascular macular degeneration. The question is whether the surgery might hasten progression to advanced-stage neovascular disease, with observational studies and case series providing conflicting information.
After so many contradictory studies, an article in a recent issue of the Archives of Ophthalmology seems to have put the issue to rest. The study did FA’s one every patient pre, 1 week post and 3 month post. Any “progression” was found to be undetected CNV due to the cataract.
