Is Collagen Cross-Linking Effective in Treating Keratoconus?

Collagen cross-linking, an ingenious method for strengthening the cornea in diseases like keratoconus, is gainingĀ  acceptance. A recent article in Review of Ophthalmology and Ophthalmology demonstrate that it is indeed effective and worthy of further study and use. The procedure is beyond simple- drops of riboflavin are dropped on the cornea for 30 minutes, then the cornea is exposed to special UV light which causes the cross-linking. This strengthens the cornea and reduces keratoconus. It can also be couple to Intacs implants. I think PKP’s demise is on the horizon…
