IOP Control Correlates With Visual Field Deterioration

September 27, 2011

Ophthalmology: The authors analyzed data from the well-known CIGTS study. The showed that using three measures of IOP control- maximum IOP, SD of IOP and range of IOP- one is able to demonstrate visual field deterioration with worse IOP control. This may sound intuitive, but it comes in handy to demonstrate these things with data, especially when we expose patients to some risk with our IOP-lowering surgery, or when payors balk at paying for “unproven” treatments. It also suggests the superiority of surgery as opposed to medicine, as the former demonstrates lower and more consistent IOP’s.
