Bilirubin Protects Against Diabetic Retinopathy

Ophthalmology: A study of over 3,000 patients with diabetes or impaired glucose metablism noted a significantly lower prevalence- approximately half- of diabetic retinopathy among those with elevated bilirubin levels. The theory is that bilirubin has protective anti-oxidative properties, as some studies have demonstrated an inverse relationship between bilirubin and cardiovascular disease.
