Child Self-Refraction Superior to Cycloplegic Refraction

June 16, 2011

Ophthalmology:  I have grown tired of refraction- I admit it. It is hard to get the patient- especially a child- to tell me exactly what he prefers (“three or four?” “Can you show me one again?”). A new device called Adspecs (Adaptive Eyecare, Ltd) has a fluid filled lens that can be adjusted by the wearer to give the best possible vision. This allows the wearer to reach the refraction result, and was found to be more accurate that the standard method. Unfortunately, it does not address astigmatism- hopefully they will perfect it and all patients will refract themselves.
