Post-op Spike After Trab Does NOT Lead To Vision Loss

April 21, 2011

The old wives’ tale has been that a post trabeculectomy spike in eye pressure could “snuff out” a patient’s visual field and cause vision loss, and thus these spikes truly became dreaded. An article in Journal of Glaucoma puts this myth to rest, by looking at data from the Collaborative Initial Glaucoma Study. However, I have a feeling they did not restrict the study to very sick, end-stage eyes, so I think the issue has not been put to rest and these spikes will still be dreaded.
