Can An Eye Exam Detect Life Threatening Diseases? Yes!

January 30, 2011

Ophthalmologists can detect many “silent” diseases that no other doctor can. For example, we can find tiny clots in the retina blood vessels that can often mean that a patient is at high risk for stroke or heart attack, or, can be a sign of leukemia. I have saved many lives this way. Scleritis is a disease of the white of the eye which usually is a sign of a life-threatening disease. Melanoma in the back of the eye can spread and kill. I have diagnosed high blood pressure and diabetes many times in patients who never knew they had it.  Swelling of the optic nerves can be a sign of a brain tumor. So be sure to see an ophthalmologist on a regular basis-not just for your precious vision, but for your life!
