Why Patients Should Get a Second Opinion
December 8, 2010
In today’s NYTimes, several cardiologists were found to have implanted hundreds of unnecessary cardiac stents. This article only reinforces the imperative to get a second opinion for any major procedure. Doctors are human, too, and can sometimes act unethically. Fortunately, it’s not common- but it’s not rare. I’ve seen plenty of patients who were told they needed cataract surgery and/or premium intraocular lens implants that cost $2000 each, when in fact, these patients needed no surgery at all. Two ophthalmologists in Staten Island, NY, are sitting in jail for fraud.
