What Are Treatment Options for Loss of Zeis, Moll and Meibomian Glands Due to Stevens-Johnson Syndrome/TEN?

November 10, 2010

My brother contracted Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) in July 2007.  Because of this, his zeis, moll and meibomian glands have burnt up and he no longer has lubrication in his eyes.  He is in pain every single day of his life because of the dry eye.  We went to see the doctors at the Boston Foundation for Sight and they were able to fit him with a scleral lens so that he may be somewhat independent during the day, but when the contacts are out, he cannot leave the dark bedroom.  He is unable to work or have any type of social life because of his eyes.  How can he be helped?  Is there any type of surgeries out there that can replace these glands?  Please let me know.  Thanks much!

he may very well benefit from limbal stem cell transplants. they will not replace the glands that were lost, however, but i think hs condition will be better. he should seek an opinion at aworld-class eye hospital like ny eye and ear, wills, bascom palmer etc.
