What are Treatment Options for Retinal Detachment in 3 Month Old Infant?

November 3, 2010

I have a son of 3 months with a detached retina in both eyes on 5th stage. He had a surgery on 19th oct in his left eye, but I am told there is no hope to restore his vision. i have heard about stem cell treatment of stem cells, and retinal cloning. Can you comment on these options?

my son of 19 months has developed ROP due to doctors malpractice .was diagnosed wen he was 2 months.and was lasered 5 times and after that had vitrectomy in both eyes. we are waiting for advanced treatment for so.

no. we are still in the early stages of this research.

My healthy 5 month old daughter was diagnosed with bilateral retina detachments at five weeks old, her left eye was full detached and has cataract while her right eye was partionally detached, had vitrectomy procedures with silicone oil done on both eyes at two different times. It is not from ROP, since she was born at 36 weeks. Her case is very unusual and rare, we still don’t know how well she can see since she is too young. I am wondering if retina stem cell treatment will help her?

  • ari

blindness from rop is due to the extent of the disease- even when screened properly, we sometimes are faced with advanced disease which our lasers and surgery cannot help.
its true that more and more ophthalmologists dont want to do rop work due to malpractice concerns, which is really a shame and an indictment of our ridiculous malpractice policy, but i am not aware of any crisis yet where kids are not getting screened. no hospital can operate a neonatal until today w/o providing rop screening- the authorities would never allow it. but a crisis will probably emerge sooner or later, and that is when policy will be modified.

I wish we could do something about this medical malpractices if this is really the reason of babies gone blind…
i have a 3 month old baby suffering from ROP stage 5 in his left eye with complete retina detachment and regressed ROP at his right eye with retinal dragging..next week he will have a laser to take off a white tissue or scabs that is growing on his right eye..So scared for my son..but we have no choice but to do it as this might cost him to have retina detachment in the future…I hope that someday our best doctors will find cure for ROP…just keep on praying and be positive…

Based on the current state of knowledge and treatment available such as laser treatment, premature babies that develop ROP and are properly screened and treated are unlikely to be blind. If the baby is blind, medical malpractice is often the reason. The research and large studies show that babies who are properly screened and timely treated are unlikely to end up with detached retinas.

there is nothing available- more surgery unlikely to help. im very sorry.

there is no stem cell treatment for rop. if you pay for such treatment, you are throwing away your money.

We also have a son of 1 year and 5 months hj (born 01/02/2010), he was born 26 weeks and was discharged after 77 days and according to medical reports his vision was normal, one month at home to realize some males in the eye, after several tests in Manaus-Amazonas-Br, we pro SPO in HC, but it was too late, resulting finalm ROP level 5, and the second doctor was not recommended any surgical procedure, in short, lost his sight. I have read much about these treatments w / stem cells in China (Beike), now do not know how true that is, if the results are encouraging, I am afraid of being deceived. Anyone been there? Anyone know this treatment?

    I await more information, abcs

I’m from Jordan, my nephew is 6 months year old and he suffers from retinal detachment due to oxygen toxicity from the incubator. doctors here in jordan say that he suffers from 4th stage and some doctors in USA might be able to help.
can any one comment on this?
And swati please can you give me informations about the case of ur suns’s right eye and who performed the surgery.

Yes Gail. You are Correct. Whatever the advanced treatments are coming are for other retinal diseases except for ROP. We hope for the best that something would come in the future definitely for this. Me too have a baby with ROP stage 5 lost vision in both of her eyes and i am looking for all the opportunities and resources available.

please understand any progress in retinal implants will likely be useful for any eye that has retinal disease. also, please appreciate that none of these developments are likely to be useful in our generation- we are truly at the very initial steps. being able to mimic the retina and give patients useful vision is an enormous challenge and will take decades to perfect.

  • My 8 year old has retinopathy of prematurity. He can distinguish between light and dark in his left eye due to a hemorrhage a few weeks after birth and has low vision in his right eye. It is discouraging to read that the electronic subretinal implants are not being developed for sufferers of ROP but for those with adult degenerative diseases such as macular degeneration and others.

i want to emphasize again that these stem cell centers have zero proof that their treatments work. no reputable doctor or scientist will vouch for it. these centers do not publish their data in reputable journals.

Hello, there are many options outside of America as far as Stem Cell Treatment. Websites to look into:

    http://www.xcell-center.com/
    http://www.beikebiotech.com/

I wish you the best of luck. My son has bilateral detached retinas and we are seeking a physician that can help.

  • swati

i too have have a son of nine months with stage 5 rop in left eye. right eye is saved by operation at age of 5 months. we are too looking for his treatment in stem cell regeneration. do take care of ur baby n i hope that u get the treatment.

  • ari

cloning, stem cell etc. is not a near-term option, but please do follow developments reported on our blog under the stem cell treatment category: http://eyedocnews.com/00category/blog/stem-cell/

i have 4 months kid suffering from same thing same stage. got surgery done of one eye but not successful.
what i know there is no such cure at present available for stage 5 ROP (retinopathy of prematurity).
we hope in future there would be something to get the vision back like stem cell transplantation, whole eye transplant, retinal transplant etc.
I suggest you to pls give 100% towards the upbringing of the child.
