Bausch+Lomb Recalls PreserVision Eye Vitamin AREDS 2 Formula with Omega 3 Softgels Due to Choking Sensation

July 23, 2010

Yesterday, Bausch + Lomb announced a voluntary recall of its its PreserVision® Eye Vitamin AREDS 2 Formula with Omega 3 soft gels. The recall was based on a small number of reports predominantly within a specific age group, age 70 and older, who reported difficulty swallowing or a choking sensation when taking the soft gel. The company reiterated that the formulation of the softgel is safe, except that they believe the design of the soft gel requires further consideration.

  • Before giving pills to someone who has difficulty swallowing, give a teaspoon of applesauce to “lube the tube.” Afterwards, give the pill with cold water. Then follow with another teaspoon of apple sauce. This works for Dad, he is 92 years of age and does have difficulty swallowing.

This method is a combination of advice from a 30year veteran nurse and a highly experienced Speech/ Language Pathologist, both well versed in swallowing difficulties of the elderly.

Any treatment for a 64 yr. old with Retinopathy of prematurity? Blind in one eye and very little sight in other eye. Lots of lesions blocking pupil. Also have had cataract surgery.
