Avastin vs. Lucentis

February 24, 2009

I know this has been argued to death, but I was hoping I could hear from fellow ophthalmologists what their personal experience has been on the subject of using avastin versus lucentis.

My husband recently had the avastin shot in his eye to treat macular degeneration, as well as rubiosis. It was a last resort, as he is just 48 years old. Yes, I said Avastin, NOT lucentis, and it seems to be improving his once non existant vision. Price Gouging is exactly what it seems to be, and we have gone into this with our eyes WIDE open.

That’s was my impression too. Thanks!

  • I think most of us do not see a clinical difference and perhaps even a better result than Lucentis. The study should remove any bias from cost of the product and cost of obtaining the product (in man hours).

In my area, I think most use Lucentis- I think it’s a malpractice or insurance issue. I was curious if anyone really found a difference between the two. I suppose we’ll have to wait for the nih study!

  • I don’t know of any retinal physicians that prefer to initiate treatment with Lucentis. This may be a regional observation. I am in the DC metro area, specfically northern Virginia. What aspects were you curious about?
