April 27, 2010
Has much research gone into familial Drusen and will it eventually turn into macular degeneration in either form?

It is my experience that Familial Drusen are not related to macular degeneration, that is, while many non-retina doctors may worry about familial drusen, there is no worry that it will lead to macular degeneration.

i haven’t read much lately about familial drusen, also called dominant drusen. the odds of losing significant vision or converrting to wet amd is very low. But if you are worried, consult a specialist.
I don’t believe this is true as I have had dominant familial drusen from age 30-40, and it is progressing every year. My scans show huge amounts of drusen(hundreds) and the distortion I am experiencing grows every year. As of yet I have not experienced the wet side of the condition. I am 40 now and I cannot drive at night anymore and use a reader to enlarge print.
