January 26, 2010
Dear Doctor – is it okay for me to have cataract surgery if I am already suffering from macular degeneration?

in bad macular degeneration-sometimes- if the cataract is pretty dense, then things will be brighter, and your peripheral vision will improve. typically, dont expect to get better central vision- the improvement will be pretty marginal.
now, if your macular degeneration is mild-moderate, you can expect a lot more improvement.
in these kinds of cases, i suggest a 2nd opinion.
I agree with Dr. Weitzer.
If your expectations are low (i.e. you have nothing to lose and everything to gain), you will be quite happy. I would state your expectations with your doctor to relieve any misgivings either one of you might have.
