Will Electronic Contact Lens Make Bionic Vision a Reality?

September 10, 2009

Researchers have created contact lenses that incorporate built-in electronics that could make bionic vision a reality.

Scientists at the University of Washington in Seattle have created these lenses which included LEDs and are wirelessly powered. Many of the items included in the lenses are semitransparent so that the wearer can still walk around while wearing them.

The potential for the development ranges from health care including noninvasive health indicators, such as reporting blood sugar levels for diabetic users to computer gaming. Including information from the Internet on the contact lens is also a possibility.

However, mass production has been difficult because the integrated portions need to be added separately. Ensuring the safety of the lenses still needs researched as well.
