Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery reported on a study done in the Netherlands to compare the efficacy of dexamethasone 0.1% eyedrops after phacoemulsification versus a single perioperative subconjunctival injection of betamethasone acetate 5.7 mg/mL to prevent anterior segment inflammation and macular edema.

Four weeks later, flare was higher in the drops group, but macular edema was the same. The authors suggest that the injection is a reasonable alternative. I would agree in patients who are unable/unwilling to take drops- it’s better than nothing.
