Canon announced earlier this week the introduction in Japan of the new CR-2 Plus digital non-mydriatic retinal camera incorporating fundus auto-fluorescence (FAF) imaging, a feature useful during eye and medical examinations for such conditions as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy.

The new Canon CR-2 Plus model, the successor to the CR-2 model [1] released December 2010, enables examinations without the use of pupil-dilating eye drops, and incorporates a dedicated digital SLR camera unit (offering gradation expression well suited for fundus imaging).

The incorporated FAF imaging function makes possible the observation of fluorescence in the fundus without the need to administer a contrast dye, thereby supporting reduced patient discomfort during examination.

In addition to the four sensitivity settings (ISO 800, 1600, 3200, 6400) offered by its predecessor, the new Canon CR-2 Plus includes two additional settings (ISO 200, 400) to the lower-end ISO range for a total of six settings, making possible ocular fundus observation that supports a wide range of needs for both patients and examiners.

The Canon CR-2 Plus digital non-mydriatic retinal camera will be available in Japan from October 7, 2011. No word on when the new system will be available in the United States.
