Routine Eye Exam For Fungal Infection Worthless

Ophthalmology: Here’s something every over-worked ophthalmology resident knows. Patients with fungus infection in the blood always get an ophthalmology consultation in the hospital to rule out fungus in the eye, even if the patient has no complaints. I have done many of these, and I have never found fungus in the eye. Never. Yet we are always called. This article demonstrated in 211 patients that only two patients had fungus in the eye- one of these patients could verbalize symptoms, and the other was unable. Considering how rare it is, I hope this routine practice is discarded, as it is an utterly inefficient waste of resources.
