Several articles have come out lately in peer-reviewed journals which suggest that in the long run, there is practically no difference between patching and Atropine for amblyopia (“lazy eye”). In fact, there seems to be no difference between full time patching and part time patching, and furthermore, little difference between daily Atropine and twice a week. This is an enormous relief, as parents can finally not have to bear the guilt of not being hard enough on their kids to wear their patches. I rarely advocate patching to my patients, and I think the spectacle of kids running around with patches on their face will be relegated to the dustbin. What do others think?
