Can Children’s Retinas Predict Later Hypertension?

Posted By Dr. Risa Schulman On August 2, 2011 @ 6:20 am In Pediatrics,Research,Retina | Comments Disabled

Pre-adolescent children whose parents have hypertension were shown to have narrower blood vessels in their retinas. This suggests the likelihood of the children having predisposition for hypertension later in life, and offers a way to screen such future problems in the children.  (Interestingly, the children also had higher BMIs than kids whose parents did not have hypertension).  Pictures of the retina were taken with a digital fundus camera and analyzed by computer.
