Inexpensive Device for Detecting Refractive Error Developed at MIT

Researchers from MIT have developed a product that inexpensively detects refractive error. The small, simple-to-use plastic device (costing only $4.99) clips onto an iPhone or any low end Smartphone and provides diagnosis in less than 5 minutes. The test can be conducted even by an untrained person.

The device uses two technologies called NETRA and CATRA. An iPhone (or any other Smartphone) is preloaded with the NETRA software. When the device is activated, the CATRA system sweeps a beam of light across the user’s eye. In few minutes, the software computes the information obtained and provides prescription data.
