Evidence Builds for a Role of Omega-3 in Reducing AMD Risk

In the footsteps of a ten-year study performed at Harvard and published in March showing omega-3s reduced the risk of age-related macular degeneration (see EyeDocNews post “Can Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Fish Reduce Risk of Macular Degeneration in Women? [1]“), comes another study focusing on these effects in an elderly French population.

The Alienor study is also a prospective study performed with 666 subjects (that’s 1289 eyes) who were over 73 years of age.  Once again, those subjects consuming the highest levels of omega-3s had a reduced risk of both early stage (17% reduction) and late stage (74% reduction!) AMD.
