A recent study in mice illuminated a potential mechanism for how lutein protects the eyes. When lutein was fed to mice in the diet, it prevented the thinning of the photoreceptor cell layer in the eyes usually seen after light exposure damage.  It also up-regulated genes that promote DNA repair and cell survival, and in fact less DNA damage was also seen in these mice.
