Photorefractive Keratotomy (PRK) Laser Surgery For Children With Amblyopia

Ten children, ages 7-13, underwent successful PRK. These kids had hyperopic anisometropic amblyopia and were not compliant with wearing glasses. It’s amazing these kids were able to sit quietly for the procedure- my kids can’t stay still for a second. Performing laser PRK for these kids seems a little too aggressive, but I suppose it’s better than letting the amblyopic eye continue to deteriorate.  Another related study looked at a small group of kids with neurobehavioral problems (ie, autism) who refused to wear high prescription glasses. Those who underwent PRK demonstrated a 10% improvement in their developmental quotient.
