American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Against Stem Cell Treatment

Ophthalmology: The AAPOS, as I have been trying to say for quite a while here, has come out against stem cell treatments, the latest for optic nerve hypoplasia. This treatment is for children, and the Society is wary about “informed consent” exposing children to an unproven treatment. They also state that it makes no medical sense to inject these stem cells into the blood and somehow they will enter the eye and reform the ganglion cell layer. The Society is hopeful that stem cells will be helpful in the future, but for now, there is zero evidence it works, and institutions that provide these unproven services have an obligation to publish their data in reputable, peer-reviewed literature like everybody else.
