Toric IOL Beats Lymbic Relaxing Incisions for Managing Corneal Astigmatism

In an article in the Journal of Refractive Surgery, researchers compared toric IOL’s  in patients with about two diopters of cylinder to lymbic relaxing incisions (LRI’s) for managing corneal astigmatism at the time of cataract surgery. The toric IOL group reached 20/40 uncorrected 87% of the time, compared to 53% in the LRI group. In my own practice, I have been very happy with the results I get with toric IOL’s and I feel better about never having adopted LRI’s, as I read too much literature suggesting it wasn’t precise enough.
