Ranibizumab With Prompt/Deferred Laser Or Alone Again Beats Laser

Ophthalmology: Two large studies were published which confirmed what was demonstrated last year- that injections of Ranibizumab (Lucentis) with deferred (> 24 weeks) or prompt laser was superior to laser alone for diabetic retinopathy involving the central macula. Only 2-3 more injecions were required after the first year. One of the studies suggested that even the injections alone without any laser was better. We really ought to re-consider laser as the standard of care, and most likely, Avastin is just as good.
