It has been established that specific vitamins and nutrients or healthy eating in general can help prevent the development of cataracts, but a new study has looked specifically at the effects of particular healthy diets, such as vegetarian, vegan and low-meat
The study was part of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC-Oxford) and focused on non-diabetic subjects greater than 40 years old. They found that risk of cataracts was highest in meat eaters but steadily decreased with low meat eaters (15% less risk), fish eaters (those who ate fish but not meat, 21% less risk), vegetarians (30% less risk) and vegans (40% less risk).
