A study presented at ARVO suggests that N-acetylcysteine, an antioxidant, was able to preserve cone function for up to six months in a mouse model of retinitis pigmentosa, and had an additive effect when combined with gene therapy. The nice thing is that this can be administered orally in drinking water. This study did not address rod cell death, but if cones could be preserved, these patients will have decent functional vision.
