In a recent study published in the Journal of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, entitled Termination of Amblyopia Treatment: When to Stop Follow-up Visits and Risk Factors for Recurrence, researchers examined when it is safe to stop follow-up visits after cessation of amblyopia treatment, and sought to identify factors associated with deterioration of visual acuity following amblyopia treatment.

Doctors cite the article as providing a basis for recommending that patching routine not be terminated prematurely to avoid the risk of visual regression. Other interesting findings from the study include that amblyopia treatment works and those who don’t follow the prescribed treatment can face negative consequences.

The article also recommended vigilance after treatment since the study showed that when a child had vision loss following amblyopia treatment, 95% of the time that vision loss occurred within two years.
