How Can Retinopathy of Prematurity be Detected Most Effectively?

A Dutch research group has determined that screening criteria based on risk estimates of developing treatment-demanding retinopathy of prematurity is the most effective model for screening for retinopathy of prematurity.
The model was developed using retrospective data from 3 national registers. When tested on the original data, it detected all cases and resulted in 17.4% fewer infants required for screening. They determined that the model would miss 1 case every 11 years and result in 1 case of blindness every 18 years.
