A study reported online in the latest issue of the Archives of Ophthalmology investigated the factors influencing long-term graft survival and visual acuity in patients receiving their first penetrating corneal graft for keratoconus.

Analyzing data from a large registry, Australian researchers found that visual acuity outcomes and graft survival after penetrating corneal transplant for keratoconus are good, but younger patients are likely to need repeat transplants during their lifetimes. Specifically, survival rates of first grafts for keratoconus were 89% at 10 years after transplant, 49% at 20 years, and 17% at 23 years.
