Should Optometrists Be Allowed to Administer Injections to Eyelids?

In the latest regulatory battle over the scope of eyecare provided by optometrists, ophthalmologists in South Carolina say they will fight a bill (S503 pending in the state Senate) that would authorize optometrists to administer injections to patients’ eyelids.
Ophthalmologists argue that optometrists don’t have the training to administer injections, or deal with the complications that may accompany injections.
Optometrists counter that every optometry school teaches injections, and they have the necessary training.
