Can High Blood Glucose Levels Predict the Risk of Retinopathy?

The February 2011 issue of the Archives of Ophthalmology reports on a study evaluating the predictive values of hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) levels for retinopathy 10 years after the baseline examination. The data showed that the risk of retinopathy increases sharply in individuals with over 108 mg/dL for FPG and over 6.0% for HbA1c levels.
