New emPower Electronic Glasses From Pixeloptics Finally Available

February 15, 2011

Last year here in EyeDocNews, we blogged about how PixelOptics was developing new electronic bifocal eyeglasses.

The new glasses, marketed under the emPower brand, will be available for sale to the public nationwide later this year after an initial rollout in Virginia and North Carolina.

What’s so cool? With the push of a button on the temple part of the glasses, the liquid crystals in the lenses change their configuration and change their power, allowing one to read. Push again, and the lenses go back to distance vision. The new glasses are pricey- about $1,000, but it looks like it’s worth it.

Check out the review of emPower glasses from Pixeloptics in the New York Times.
