Can Inhibition of Enzyme Prevent Neovascularization Seen in Diabetic Retinopathy and Retinopathy of Prematurity?

Researchers at the Medical College of Georgia recently announced the results of a study showing that the inhibition or removal of an enzyme known as 12-lipoxygenase may prevent or treat ischemic retinopathy by stalling growth of unwanted vessels in the retina.

Lead researcher Dr. Mohamed Al-Shabrawey stated:

[I]f we can target or inhibit this enzyme’s pathway, we might be able to prevent or treat diseases of ischemic retinopathy.
