Lutein and Zeaxanthin Useful for Treating Macular Degeneration and Cataracts

Ophthalmic Research recently published an overview of the current literature on the role of antioxidants and micronutrients in the prevention and treatment of ocular diseases.  It concludes that antioxidants like beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin seem to be useful for treatment of macular degeneration and cataracts, but that vitamins such as A, C and E and the mineral zinc may only be useful for patients at high-risk for age-related macular degeneration.
