From the Archives of Ophthalmology comes a study that evaluated whether prophylactic use of intraocular pressure (IOP)–lowering medication is effective in reducing the IOP spikes after intravitreal injections of pegaptanib, bevacizumab, and ranibizumab. The conclusion was that pressure-lowering drops given prophylactically before intra-vitreal injections were ineffective in preventing spikes. The study found that the spikes were transient (dropping to less than 30 mm Hg in 20 minutes), and should simply be observed and managed accordingly.
