Is the Kindle a Good Product for Patients With Low Vision From Conditions Such as Macular Degeneration?

Amazon Kindle [1]Amazon KindleIs the Kindle from Amazon a good product for patients suffering from low vision? Doctors, and their patients with eye conditions such as macular degeneration and glaucoma that reduce vision, say  “Yes.”

My webmaster’s wife has a patient with the wet form of macular degeneration who said she loves being able to increase the font size on her Kindle.

The Eye Doc Blog says that the Kindle “holds a lot of promise for patients that have poor vision as a result of macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, glaucoma, and other eye conditions that impair vision.” Among the benefits of the Kindle cited by the blog for patients with low vision are:

  • it uses a high resolution screen with very high contrast letters
  • it displays black print on a white background
  • allows users to increase the size of the letters
  • a text-to-speech option that will read to patients
