AJO: Surprisingly, unilateral multifocal implants (Tecnis and Rezoom) demonstrated better near vision and stereopsis than those patients implanted with a regular implant. We were always taught that bilaterality was necessary to make these implants work. The improvement was not dramatic, so I think on a practical basis, it’s going to be a hard sell- patients won’t shell out $2000 for marginal near vision improvement.
