A large study published in the November 2010 issue of the Archives of Ophthalmology concluded that long-term use of vitamins C and E had no visible effect on the incidence of cataract in older men. The randomized placebo-controlled trial was the longest yet to test antioxidant supplements as a potential preventive measure for cataracts.

However, researchers cautioned that while the outcome showed no effect, the study doesn’t quite eliminate the possibility that antioxidants may help prevent cataracts since cataracts develop slowly, and prevention may require even longer periods of treatment and perhaps treatment at earlier ages.
