Does Ischemic Diabetic Retinopathy Protect From Nuclear Sclerosis?

A clever study in AJO confirms that oxygen is the culprit in nuclear sclerotic cataract. Diabetics with ischemic retinas had much less cataract pre and post vitrectomy compared to diabetic without ischemia. So, although ischemia stinks, the lack of oxygen is why these patients don’t get that kind of cataract. If we can somehow prevent oxygen getting to the lens, we could slow down cataract progression.
