Anyone Using AzaSite Eye Drops To Treat Posterior Blepharitis/Meibomian Gland Disease?
October 10, 2010
I have recently been changing over to AzaSite (Azithromycin) drops from Erythromycin ointment as my drug of choice for daily treatment of posterior blepharitis/Meibomian gland disease (MGD). It seems to be very well tolerated, is only once a day, and is reported to have anti-inflammatory properties, thus reducing the need for topical steroids. This is a difficult, annoying, chronic condition for so many patients, and I think they will be very grateful.

i have been using azasite for blepharitis for a long time, works great. the only problem, patients have trouble with bottle design. hopefully next year new bottle design will come out and it will be much easier to use.
any experience with dr maskin’s meibomian gland prober?
The Web posts about doctor’s rx for AzaSyte say to apply the drops directly to eyelid, not install as normal eye drops

(Eric D. Donnenfeld, MD)
i.e., apply to lid margin and massage for about 10 seconds

(Thomas John, MD)
I.e., put drop on clean finger or applicator and apply directly to eyelashes on lid margin
Any comments on how to apply the AzaSyte?
not a bad idea to massage it into the lid. but no evidence if it’s really any better than just dropping it into the eye like a usual drop. try either method.
i routinely use azithromycin eye drops for meibomian gland disease and find them useful. I would welcome more info regarding the duration of treatment with azithro, since this is a chronic disease.
i prescribe it every night for a couple of weeks, then 2-3 times a week indefinitely. when they stop, the mgd comes right back
