Will the AdaptDx Device Assist With Early Detection of AMD?

Late last month, I noticed a Tweet from Mass Eye & Ear about their looking for candidates to participate in a clinical trial for a new device to detect the earliest stages of age-related macular degeneration. I had not previously heard of the device nor the company but some online research quickly led me to the Apeliotus Vision Science’s AdaptDx.

It turns out that this new device, using dark adaption techniques (the time to re-adapt following “photobleaching” from a light flash) can detect small changes that are signs of macular degeneration (a breakdown of retinal pigment epithelium – RPE – in the macular). In other words, since AMD is related to a breakdown of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)/Bruch’s membrane complex in the retina, measurement of dark adaptation is essentially a bioassay of the health of this membrane complex.

For further discussion on why AdaptDx has tremendous potential as a tool for AMD screening by optometrists and ophthalmologists, and how this simple diagnostic device from Apeliotus Technologies may significantly advance the early detection of dry age-related macular degeneration, please see my full report at this link [1].
