Do Screening Tests Administered to Teens Fail to Detect Certain Vision Problems?

MedPage Today has reported on a study finding that while traditional school-based vision screening tests with an eye chart can accurately detect nearsightedness, it was not effective at detecting other types of refractive errors such as astigmatism and farsightedness. Researchers added that while the failure to detect Pastigmatism likely isn’t that critical (since clinically significant cases would get picked up as poor vision and reported), the lack of reliability in detecting farsightedness is a bigger concern.
